How to Land the Perfect Agent
Advice for Young Performers
This is probably the question that is asked most in our industry. How can I get my kid’s talent seen? Well here are a few helpful guidelines to keep in mind when going after an agency.
Are you Ready? No, seriously. Is your child at a competitive level to be able to go out on professional auditions? One of the biggest mistakes that are made today is seeing POTENTIAL as TALENT. Potential is the thing that brings you into acting class, helps you audition for the school play so that you can grow as a performer, and/or shows you that you or your child has an interest in the arts. TALENT is a cultivated skill level that allows you to go into an audition room and shine. So first, let’s be READY! THE APPROACH Okay, now you are ready – So, what’s the BEST way to get an agent? In the wise words of Casting Director Howard Meltzer, “ANYWAY you CAN!” I just love that saying. And it’s true. Agents are hungry by nature. They are constantly seeking auditions for their clients. The last thing you want to present is that you will be one of the actors at the metaphoric dinner table who just eats and eats and eats.
You want to make sure you are a table setter (What do you do to make the agent’s job easier.), a considerate dinner guest (How do you present yourself in the audition room with preparation and professionalism.) and make sure you help clear the metaphorical table after the meal. Maybe even help with the dishes. (This relates to how you handle your etiquette and manners POST audition. I.e.: No calling that agent asking, “Did you hear from them?”
